After her rescue by the rebels of District 13, Katniss is convinced to become "the Mockingjay": a symbol of the rebellion against the ruling Capitol. As part of a deal, she demands that the leader of District 13, President Coin, grant(与える、授ける、聞き入れる) immunity(免除、免疫、抗体) to all of the victors of the Hunger Games. She also demands the right to kill President Snow, the leader of the Capitol, herself. Finally, the leaders of Thirteen decide to go rescue Peeta, after realizing the guilt Katniss feels is impeding(妨げる、じゃまする) her role in becoming "the Mockingjay." After the rescue it is discovered that Peeta has been brainwashed into believing Katniss is the enemy and tries to strangle her upon their reunion in District 13.

The rebels, including Katniss, take control of the districts and finally begin an assault on the Capitol itself. However, an assault on a "safe" Capitol neighborhood goes wrong, and Katniss and her team flee further into the Capitol with the intent of finding and killing President Snow. Many members of Katniss' team are killed, including Finnick Odair. Eventually, Katniss finds herself pressing on alone towards Snow's mansion, which has supposedly been opened to shelter Capitol children (but is actually intended to provide human shields for Snow). Afterwards, bombs placed in supply packages kill many of these children and a rebel medical team, including Katniss' sister, Prim. Prim's death scars Katniss to the point of mental instability.

President Snow is tried and found guilty, but he tells Katniss that the final assault that killed Prim was ordered by President Coin, not the Capitol. Katniss realizes that if this is true, the bombing may have been the result of a plan originally developed by Gale, however, Gale denied his involvement. Katniss remembers a conversation with Snow in which they agreed not to lie to each other. When she is supposed to execute Snow, she realizes that he was telling the truth and kills Coin instead. A riot ensues and Snow is found dead, having possibly choked on his own blood (laughing) or been trampled(踏みつける、つぶす) in the crowd. Katniss then tries to commit suicide by swallowing the pill that was sewn onto her suit in case she was captured by the Capitol during one of her missions, but Peeta stops her. Katniss is acquitted (無罪とする、釈放される)due to her apparent insanity and returns to her home in District 12, along with others who are attempting to rebuild it. Peeta returns months after as well, having largely recovered from his brainwashing. Finally, Katniss surmises(推測する、憶測) that falling in love with Peeta was inevitable(避けられない、必然的な), as he had always represented to her the promise of a better future, rather than the destruction she now associates with Gale. She says that she did not need Gale's fire, as she already had it herself; she needed Peeta, who symbolized the hope she needed to survive. Together with Haymitch they create a book filled with the stories of the previous tributes and others who died in the war so that they will not be forgotten.

In the epilogue, Katniss speaks as an adult, more than fifteen years later. She and Peeta are married and have two children. The Hunger Games are over, but she dreads(いやがる、怖がる) the day her children learn the details of their parents' involvement in both the Games and the war. When she feels distressed(苦悩、困窮), Katniss plays a comforting but repetitive "game," reminding herself of every good thing that she has ever seen someone do. The series ends with Katniss' reflection that "there are much worse games to play."

After winning the 74th Hunger Games in the previous novel, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark return home to District 12, the poorest sector in the country of Panem. Katniss and Peeta are preparing to embark(乗り出す、着手する) on a "Victory Tour" of Panem, but have rarely spoken since they won the Games and Peeta realized the emotions Katniss displayed towards him were exaggerated at the request of their mentor, Haymitch Abernathy. Katniss is struggling to understand her emotions involving Peeta and Gale, as she was kissed by Gale upon returning to District 12. The day Katniss is due to leave, the Capitol's President Snow arrives at Katniss' home and tells her she needs to convince the people of Panem that she and Peeta are really in love because their actions in the Games have sparked unrest(心配、動揺) across the districts, who believe their attempted suicide was an act of defiance(大胆な反抗、挑戦、無視) against the Capitol rather than love. He indirectly threatens Gale and Katniss' family.

The first stop on the Victory Tour is District 11, the home of Katniss' friend and ally in the Hunger Games, Rue, before she died. During the ceremony, Katniss and Peeta deliver quick speeches to the people of District 11, thanking them for their tributes and Peeta offers to donate a portion of his Victory winnings to the families of Rue and Thresh, the other District 11 victim. When the speeches conclude, an old man whistles a tune that Rue used in the arena to tell Katniss that she was safe. The song acts as a signal and everyone salutes(敬礼する、礼儀正しくあいさつする) Katniss using the same gesture that she used to say farewell to Rue. However the old man is shot dead and the Capitol refuses to let the pair make any personal speeches during the rest of the tour. Katniss and Peeta then proceed to travel to all of the twelve districts and the Capitol. Katniss informs Peeta of their need to emphasise their love and Peeta responds by, during an interview, proposing to Katniss publicly. Despite this, Katniss learns that their attempts of subduing (制圧する、服従させる)rebellion in the districts and convincing Snow of their relationship have failed. At a celebratory dinner back in District 12 Katniss sees a secret TV report showing a violent uprising in District 8 and the resulting killings of many citizens by the Peacekeepers, Panem's security force. After this event, security is massively tightened in District 12 and the Peacekeepers are replaced. Gale is whipped(むち打つ、たたく) by the new Head Peacekeeper for hunting and the fence surrounding District 12 becomes electrified effectively barring Katniss from escape or hunting. Katniss still escapes into the woods and encounters two runaways from District 8. They explain a theory that District 13 was not wiped out by the Capitol and that its residents have gone underground. When she returns home, Cinna and her stylists arrive to help her prepare for her bridal shoot. The stylists tell her of shortages of supplies across the Capitol that lead Katniss to realise rebellions and uprisings(暴動、反乱) are spreading across Panem. President Snow announces that, for the 75th Hunger Games, as part of the "Quarter Quell(鎮める、和らげる)", a special edition of the Games every quarter-century, tributes will be reaped from a pool of all living Victors of past Hunger Games. Katniss is chosen as female tribute for District 12, due to being the only female winner from the district, and Haymitch is chosen as male tribute but Peeta volunteers in his place to protect Katniss.

After arriving at the Capitol, Katniss and Peeta look for potential allies among the other tributes. Katniss meets Finnick Odair, a 24-year-old man who successfully survived the Games at the age of 14, and Mags, Finnick's 80-year-old mentor, both from District 4. She also meets Beetee and Wiress, an older couple from District 3 who are said to be "exceptionally smart" and adept(うまい、熟練した) at working with electronics. Beetee and Wiress tell Katniss that the Capitol leaves the control panels for their force fields vulnerable in plain sight. During the training display to the Gamemakers the pair show their defiance of the Capitol and returning to the Games, Peeta drawing a painting of Rue's death and Katniss hanging a dummy and labelling it "Seneca Crane" in reference to the executed previous Gamemaker.

The Games take place on a beach and jungle terrain(地形、地質), with a dome shaped force field enclosing the tributes and the Cornucopia(ヤギの角、豊かさの象徴) located on a small island in the middle of a miniature sea. The arena is set up to resemble an analog clock with one lethal(致命的な、致死の) event occurring every hour on a twelve hour cycle. When the Games start, Katniss and Peeta form an impromptu(即席の、思いつきの) alliance with Finnick and Mags. They try to find the arena's perimeters(周囲、周辺の長さ), but Peeta runs into the force field at the edge, stopping his heart. Luckily, Finnick is able to perform CPR to revive him, although Peeta is weakened from the incident. At midnight, lightning strikes a tree nearby, and the next hour the Gamemakers release a poisonous fog in the group's location. The toxic fog causes nerve failure and muscle spasms (けいれん、ひきつけ)which inhibits(妨げる、抑制する) their running while Katniss tries to carry Mags and Finnick carries Peeta. Mags sacrifices herself when Katniss cannot carry her any longer, allowing the other three to escape. After Mags' death, the group is attacked by mutated monkeys, but all three survive, thanks to the female tribute from District 6 sacrificing herself to save Peeta. Katniss, Peeta and Finnick join forces with Johanna Mason, a sarcastic and often cruel victor from District 7, an injured Beetee, and Wiress, who is in shock and repeatedly mumbles "tick tock". From Wiress' words, Katniss realizes that the arena is arranged like a clock, with the Gamemakers' disasters occurring on a timed chart, signaled by the lightning at 12 o'clock.

While gathered at the central Cornucopia the Careers attack the group, killing Wiress, and a battle ensues(続く、続いて起こる) until the Gamemakers cut it short by rapidly shifting the terrain and disorienting(道に迷わせる、方角をわからなくさせる) the Tributes. Beetee devises(工夫する、考案する) a plan to harness(支配する、利用する) the arena's lightning to supposedly electrocute(感電死させる) the rest of the Career tributes when they venture near the water. At night the group splits to prepare for the plan, but is attacked separately by the remaining tributes. Katniss is knocked out and has her tracker removed by Johanna. Johanna then leads the two remaining careers away from Katniss. An injured Katniss comes across Beetee, holding a knife tied to the wire and appearing to have planned to direct the knife into the forcefield. Katniss directs the lightning at the force field's control panel with an arrow tied to the wire, destroying the arena forcefield and resulting in her temporary paralysis(麻痺状態). When she wakes up, she discovers she is being transported to District 13: a place that is widely thought to no longer exist. She is joined by Finnick, Beetee, and Haymitch, but learns that Peeta and Johanna have been captured by the Capitol. Katniss is informed that from the beginning, there had been a plan among most of the tributes, Haymitch, and Head Gamemaker Plutarch who is secretly against the Capitol to break her and Peeta out of the arena. Katniss' image is being used as the symbol of the rebellion, which has spread to almost every district during the Games, and all the victors in the alliance were determined to keep Katniss alive at the expense of their own lives. The book ends with Katniss' best friend, Gale, informing her that, although he escaped with her family, District 12 has been bombed and destroyed.
Katniss Everdeen:
The protagonist(主人公) of the series, Katniss competes in the Hunger Games in each of the first two novels and constantly battles between her feelings for both Peeta and Gale. She becomes the face of the districts' rebellion after she unknowingly defies(反抗する、拒む) the Capitol in The Hunger Games.

Peeta Mellark:
The male tribute from District 12, who has secretly been in love with Katniss since they were children. His love for her is evident throughout the series. In Mockingjay, he is "hijacked", causing him to hate Katniss, but he recovers.

Haymitch Abernathy:
Katniss and Peeta's drunken friend and mentor for the Games. He won the 50th Hunger Games and was the only living victor from District 12 before Katniss and Peeta won the 74th Hunger Games.

Gale Hawthorne:
Katniss' best friend and fellow hunter. Gale is fiercely devoted to Katniss, and their relationship borders on romantic throughout the series. He is two years older than she, and lost his father in the same mine explosion that killed Katniss' father.

President Snow:
The main antagonist(敵、かたき役、←→protagonist) of the series, President Snow is the head of the Capitol and all of Panem. Provoked(憤慨させる、挑発する) by the survival of two tributes in a single Hunger Games, Snow demands of Peeta and Katniss to prove the reason behind it all was just they were madly in love.

Primrose Everdeen:
Primrose Everdeen, often called just "Prim," is Katniss's 12 year old sister (in Mockingjay, she is 13) who was chosen by lottery to be in the Hunger Games. Katniss volunteers to take her place. Prim is a sweet little child whom everyone loves, and she regularly helps their mother heal the sick.

Cinna:
Katniss' stylist in both of her Hunger Games, who urges her on to become the symbol of the rebellion and designs her dresses that she wears before entering the games (and also an armor she will wear in the war) that urged the citizens of Panem to join the rebellion from the way the dresses persuaded them to think about how wrong the Games were, and also that they could overthrow(屈服させる、くつがえす) the Capitol.

The Hunger Games is a young adult novel written by American television writer and novelist Suzanne Collins. It was first published on September 14, 2008, by Scholastic, in hardcover.[1] It is written in the voice of 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives in a post-apocalyptic(黙示録の、予言する) world in the country of Panem where the countries of North America once existed. The Capitol, a highly advanced metropolis, holds hegemony(支配、主導権) over the rest of the nation. The Hunger Games are an annual event in which one boy and one girl aged 12 to 18 from each of the 12 districts surrounding the Capitol are selected by lottery to compete in a televised battle until only one person is left.

Inspiration and originsCollins says that the inspiration to write The Hunger Games came from channel surfing on television. On one channel she observed people competing on a reality show and on another she saw footage of the invasion of Iraq. The two "began to blur(ぼんやりさせる、よごす) in this very unsettling way" and the idea for the book was formed.[5] The Greek myth of Theseus(テセウス、アテネの王) served as the basis for the story, with Collins describing Katniss as a futuristic Theseus, and that Roman gladiatorial games formed the framework. The sense of loss that Collins developed through her father's service in the Vietnam War also affected the story, whose heroine lost her father at age 11, five years before the story begins.[6] Collins stated that the deaths of the young characters and other "dark passages" were the hardest parts of the book to write, but she had accepted passages such as these were necessary to the story.[7] She considered the moments where Katniss reflects on happier moments in her past to be the more enjoyable.

As punishment for a previous rebellion against the Capitol in which a 13th district was destroyed, one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each district are selected by annual lottery to participate in the Hunger Games. This is an event in which the participants (or "tributes") must fight in an outdoor arena controlled by the Capitol, until only one individual remains. The story is narrated by 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, a girl from District 12 who volunteers for the 74th annual Hunger Games in place of her younger sister, Primrose. Also selected from District 12 is Peeta Mellark, a baker's son whom Katniss knows from school, and who once gave her bread when her family was starving.

Katniss and Peeta are taken to the Capitol where their drunken mentor, Haymitch Abernathy, victor of the 50th Hunger Games, instructs them to watch and learn the talents of the other tributes. They are then publicly displayed to the Capitol audience in a televised session with interviewer Caesar Flickerman. During this time, Peeta reveals on-air his longtime unrequited(報われない、一方的な) love for Katniss. Katniss believes this to be a ploy to gain audience support for the Games, which can be crucial for survival, as audience members are encouraged to send gifts like food, medicine, and tools to favored tributes during the Games. While nearly half the tributes are killed in the first day of the Games alone, Katniss relies on her well-practiced hunting and outdoor skills to survive. A few days into the games, Katniss develops an alliance with Rue, a 12-year-old girl from the agricultural District 11 who reminds Katniss of her sister, Primrose. The alliance is short-lived; Rue is killed by another tribute. At Rue's request Katniss sings to her, then spreads flowers over her body as a sign of respect—and of disgust towards the Capitol.

Supposedly due to Katniss and Peeta's beloved image in the minds of the audience as "star-crossed lovers", a rule change is announced midway through the Games, stating that two tributes from the same district can win the Hunger Games as a pair. Upon hearing this, Katniss searches for Peeta and eventually finds him wounded. As she nurses him back to health, she acts the part of a young girl falling in love to gain more favor with the audience and, consequently(その結果として、したがって), gifts from her sponsors. When the couple is finally the last two tributes, the Gamemakers reverse the rule change in an attempt to force them into a dramatic finale, where one must kill the other to win. Katniss, knowing that the Gamemakers would rather have two victors than none, retrieves highly poisonous berries known as "nightlock" from her pouch and offers some to Peeta. Thinking that Katniss and Peeta intend to commit suicide, the Gamemakers announce that both will be the victors of the 74th Hunger Games.

Although she survives the ordeal in the arena and is treated to a hero's welcome in the Capitol, Katniss is warned by Haymitch that she has now become a political target after defying her society's authoritarian leaders so publicly. Afterwards, Peeta is heartbroken when he learns that Katniss's actions in the arena were part of a calculated ploy to earn sympathy from the audience. However, Katniss is unsure of her own feelings and realizes that she is dreading the moment when she and Peeta will go their separate ways.

ThemesIn an interview with Collins, it was noted that the books "[tackle] issues like severe poverty, starvation, oppression(抑圧、圧迫), and the effects of war among others."[9] The book deals with the struggle for self-preservation that the people of Panem face in their districts and the Hunger Games in which they must participate.[10] The starvation and need for resources that the citizens encounter both in and outside of the arena create an atmosphere of helplessness that the main characters try to overcome in their fight for survival. Katniss's proficiency with the bow and arrow stems(～から起こる、生じる) from her need to hunt in order to provide food for her family—this necessity results in the development of skills that are useful to her in the Games, and represents her rejection of the Capitol's rules in the face of life-threatening situations.[11]
Lynette and Renee start a business in interior design, after a little persuasion from Renee. Renee suggests hiring Susan as Lynette's nanny. Lynette is reluctant, but eventually agrees. She ends up comforting Susan when she feels bad about not being as financially stable as her friends. Mike has left town after taking the job in Alaska, and Susan accepts Lynette's offer to be baby Paige's nanny, even though she originally thought she was being hired to work in Lynette and Renee's new business. The next day, Susan overhears a new client of Lynette and Renee's, and she suggests that she ask her daughter for her favorite characters to paint on her wall. The woman likes Susan's idea. Renee gets mad at Susan for her meddling, while Lynette wonders why her friend is acting strange. Susan eventually reveals that she feels the nanny job is beneath her, and is ashamed to be the poor person in her group of friends. Lynette comforts her, saying that money can't change the way she looks in their eyes.
Bree is rollerskating with Keith when she gets hot and dizzy out of nowhere and falls off her skates. She is examined by a medic who tells her that it is a hot flash and she is starting menopause. Bree is horrified. She goes to her OB/GYN, but there is a substitute working as her regular OB/GYN is out on maternity leave. She and the sub hit it off, and Bree reveals that she is in a relationship with a man 17 years her junior, and asks for ways to hide the symptoms. Later, Bree meets Keith's parents for dinner at a local restaurant; Keith's mother just happens to be the substitute OB/GYN. Throughout dinner, Keith's mom drops hints about Bree's visit to her until Bree finally admits to being menopausal. Ashamed, Bree leaves the restaurant. Keith finds her later, and tells her that he doesn't care about her being menopausal or having children with his DNA. They can always adopt. Bree sadly tells him that she does not want to have children again. Keith is upset, but asks Bree to forget the conversation for a while so that they can be happy. Bree agrees.
Gaby fears that Bob might be trying to seduce Carlos after they become friends and Lee warns her that Bob has "flipped" straight men before. Gaby confronts Carlos with her worries when she finds out that he and Bob plan to go away for a weekend and plan to share a hotel room. Carlos thinks she's wrong, but agrees, nevertheless. Bob reveals to Gaby later that he is hurt that she thinks he would try to steal Carlos from her. She listens in guilt as he explains that all he does is work and come home to an empty house. He is lonely and wants some time to hang out with guys just for companionship and nothing more. Gaby says that Bob and Carlos can go out, but later revokes the statement as she says that Lee is who Bob should really go with, as they still love each other. Bob and Lee share their first on-screen kiss.

Paul and Beth have sex finally, after Beth's initial reluctance. Afterwords, Beth begins to question Paul's motives for returning to Wisteria Lane when she finds out that he is letting his old cellmate move into his old house. He refuses to tell her why. The next day when Paul is out, Beth goes over to his old house and confronts his cellmate. She shows more of her disturbed and personality when she threatens to tell the police that he attempted to rape her if the guy does not comply with her wishes (to tell her what Paul's up to). Later, Beth confronts Paul about what his former cellmate told her (it is not revealed to the viewers at what the guy told Beth). Paul tries to defend himself, but finds there is no need, as Beth tells him as before that she supports her husband in all his endeavors. He calls her the "perfect wife", but it is proved she is not when it is revealed at the end that Beth's mother, to whom she is always whispering on the phone, is none other than Paul's equally demented and sworn enemy: the imprisoned Felicia Tilman.

Juanita is at Grace's house. She notices Gaby's necklace and asks Grace where she got it. Grace claims that it was a gift from her aunt, but Juanita is unconvinced and secretly takes it. When Gaby picks her up, Juanita tells her that Grace stole the necklace but she stole it back. Gaby admits that she gave Grace the jewelery as a present because she feels sorry for her as she is poor.

Later, Grace arrives at the Solis's house to celebrate Halloween. Gaby tells Grace that she has never made a costume before but Grace replies that she loves it. "I've never had such a pretty costume before," she says. "You're the best mom ever." Gaby smiles, and Juanita arrives in her puppy costume. "You're adorable," Gaby tells her, but suddenly Grace opens the door in her princess costume. Juanita tries to get Gaby's attention, but Gaby is preoccupied with Grace and styling her hair. Juanita looks on jealously. Later, Gaby takes Grace, Juanita and Celia trick-or-treating and greets Tom's mother, Allison. Allison accidentally suggests that Grace is Gaby's daughter, and Gaby is flustered as she hurriedly explains that Juanita is her child. Juanita is unimpressed and Gaby takes piles of candy for her, explaining that it is cheaper than therapy.

Back at the house, Grace is thrilled with all the candy she got and hands Gaby a peppermint because she said she liked them. Gaby thanks her for being so thoughtful and leaves to give Celia a bath. Grace tugs at her tiara but can't get it out of her hair. Juanita picks up some scissors and offers to help. Gaby is in the bathroom with Celia when she hears a scream. She goes to find out what happened and discovers half of Grace's hair shorn off while Juanita holds a tiara and some hair. "She was having a problem," Juanita says. "I fixed it." When Grace has gone, Gaby shouts at Juanita that her mother was furious but Grace pretended that it was all her idea. She adds that if she hadn't, Grace wouldn't be able to play there anymore. "Who cares?" Juanita asks, adding that she has only known Grace for a month. Gaby tells her that she loves spending time with Grace but Juanita replies: "You do." She adds: "You like her better than me." Gaby insists that that is not true, but Juanita points out that Gaby gave Grace a necklace but won't let her touch the jewelery. "What's so special about Grace?" she yells. Gaby is at a loss for words, and Juanita leaves. Carlos, who has been watching, approaches Gaby and tells her that Juanita knows something is up. He adds that they should stay away from Grace. Gaby refuses, explaining that she will just be more careful. "We have to protect our daughter," Carlos tells her, but Gaby replies: "They're both our daughters."

Susan tells Mike about her work for the Va Va Broom website. She tells him to yell if he wants to, but Mike replies that he should have taken the job on the oil rig in Alaska. He adds that if he had done a better job taking care of them she would not have had to resort to the website. Susan insists it is her fault, adding that she thought no one would ever know. She admits that Paul Young found out and is blackmailing her by forcing her to sell him their house. Mike is furious and picks up a hammer determined to confront Paul, but Susan begs him not to do anything because Paul wants to provoke a reaction from Mike. She climbs onto his back and claims that Paul did them a favor, saying: "I'm not lying now... look, we're closer than ever." Mike doesn't listen, but Susan admits that she has an idea to get Paul to back off.

Susan arrives at Paul's house with a basket of muffins and explains that she wants to move past their row. She claims that he has been a really good tenant and says that she is lucky, but suddenly notices a thumbtack on the wall. She produces Paul's lease agreement and claims that he is in violation by using the tack, adding that she wants him to vacate the premises within 60 days. Paul points out that she is in no position to make demands, but Susan reveals that she told Mike everything. She adds that Mike was furious that Paul was trying to blackmail her and shows him the hammer. "I had to pry it out of his hand so you wouldn't need a paramedic to pry it out of your skull," she warns. She puts a muffin on the counter to demonstrate and smashes it with the hammer. "This is you if you tell anyone and Mike finds out," she threatens. She leaves, adding: "Oh, and enjoy those raisin muffins. I hope they're all raisins - my apartment has rats."

Paul takes Beth on a date to Oakridge School, which is hosting a Halloween event. Paul asks Beth to go and get some pumpkin bread and approaches a parent. The woman asks Paul if he is sending his children there and he admits that he isn't because he has traditional family values. He explains that he heard something "troubling" about one of the teachers. When the woman asks what he knows, he asks: "Are you familiar with Mrs. Delfino?"

Later, Susan is teaching her class when an assistant enters the room and tells her that the principal wants to see her. Later, she arrives home and admits to Mike that she got fired because someone found out about the website. She adds that it wasn't Paul who told the principal, but one of the parents. However, Mike still thinks that Paul had something to do with it. Mike asks what they're going to do, and decides to take the job in Alaska. Susan begs him not to for their son, M.J.'s, sake, but Mike replies: "How much thought did you give M.J. when you were dancing around in your underwear?" He adds that M.J. will probably find out about this now and announces that Susan can no longer make decisions about their family. He tells her to take M.J. trick-or-treating while he calls about the Alaska job.

Beth and Paul arrive home from a date and Beth explains that she liked hearing from the other people at the school about Paul's childhood. "When you talk about the past, it changes how you look," she says. "You're not so intimidating." Paul leans in to kiss her, but Beth asks what he's doing. Paul tells her that he's not an "animal satisfying urges" and explains that he wants to connect with her. "I need a partner by my side," he says. "Someone I can trust. I think you can be that person. The question is, do you?" He kisses her but Beth slaps him. Angry, Paul tells Beth that he wants her to move out by the end of the week. Later, Beth is on the phone to her mother and explains that Paul wants her to leave. "I am trying to make it work," she says. "I swear I do everything he asks me." Beth suggests that she should come home, adding: "Oh yes, I know I made a commitment but I am so unhappy... Of course I want you to be proud of me. OK, I will. I'll try."

Lee finds Susan, who is trick or treating with M.J.. He explains that Paul wanted to ask again if she has any interest in selling her house, explaining: "He said your circumstances recently changed." Susan realizes that Paul was the one who got her fired and asks Lee to take M.J. trick or treating. She takes M.J.'s club from his Halloween caveman costume and knocks on Paul's door. When he opens it, she storms in and explained that she tried to give him the benefit of the doubt when he moved here. "But guess what," she adds. "The benefit of the doubt is over." She uses the club to smash up the kitchen and adds: "You know what, I'm glad I didn't let Mike do this because I'm really enjoying it. Aren't you?" She stands over Paul, who is on the floor, but Beth arrives on the stairs with a gun and tells Susan to get away from him. Susan tells Beth that she doesn't know what he's done or the person that Paul really is. But Beth replies: "I don't care. He's my husband. Now get out of our house!" When Susan has left, Beth asks Paul if he is all right and kisses him.

Mike finishes packing for Alaska and Susan admits that she doesn't want him to go for M.J. will become even more depressed then he already is without his father. Mike agrees but explains that he can earn enough money to get Paul out of their house and get their lives back. He adds that if he stays, he's afraid he will kill Paul. M.J. and Susan say goodbye to Mike. "The time comes when we all must find out what we're afraid of," Mary Alice says. "The world is a scary place. It's even more terrifying if we have to face it alone."

Meanwhile, Lynette arrives back home and hands her mother-in-law, Allison, her handcream. Allison thanks her, but Lynette asks her where the baby is and Allison explains that she is still asleep. Lynette is annoyed because Allison promised to wake the baby at 3:00 PM and complains that Paige will be up all night. "You stop yelling at me," Allison snaps. Lynette insists that she isn't, but Allison shouts: "You're yelling at me, saying it's my fault, and it isn't! You're a liar!" That night, Lynette is trying to get Paige off to sleep when she notices Allison's handcream on the table. She takes it into the bathroom to put it away and notices that Allison already has ten jars of the product. She wakes up Tom and admits that she is worried about Allison. Tom suggests that she just forgets things because she is older but Lynette adds that she has moodswings as well. Tom defends Allison, but Lynette says: "I get it... she's your mom, you love her. You can look for excuses for every one of these things, but I think there's more going on than just being a little forgetful." She settles down to sleep while Tom looks concerned.

The next morning, Tom asks Allison if she is alright and explains that she has seemed "scattered" lately. Allison replies that he has always been a worrywart and reminds him of the time he went to camp but wanted to come home because he was worried his family would be hurt by a hurricane. She goes up to get dressed and Tom tells Lynette that his mother is remembering things that he forgot about. Lynette replies that she has been doing research about senile dimentia in which a person's long-term memory remains more or less intact, their short-term memory escapes them. Lynette also found out about "sundowning", where senile people deteroriate later in the day and when their short-term memory goes, eventually their long-term memory will go as well. Tom continues to insist that his mother is not senile, adding that Lynette has been trying to get her out of the house since she arrived. Lynette denies that this is a tactic, adding that she's starting to get worried and isn't comfortable leaving her with the baby. "There's nothing wrong with my mother, OK?" Tom yells. "So just drop it."

When the children on Wisteria Lane start trick-or-treating, Allison warns that they are about to run out of candy. Tom explains that he has lots left in the cupboard. However, later, Allison repeats again that they are running out of candy and decides to go to the store. Penny insists that there is more somewhere but Allison promises her that she will take care of it and leaves as Penny looks on, worried. Later, Tom is watching horror movies with his sons (the thumb-cutting scene from Two Thousand Maniacs!) when the doorbell rings. Tom shouts to Allison to answer it, but Penny explains that she went out to get more candy. Tom goes to find her, explaining to the children that it's just a little late for Allison to be out. He walks through the crowd of trick-or-treaters looking for her, but doesn't notice her sitting on the curb looking scared and confused. Meanwhile, Lynette is talking to Lee at Renee's party when she receives a call from Carlos and promises that she will be right there. At the Solis house, she finds Allison sitting on the porch. "Oh thank God," Allison says. "I was walking, I must have got turned around. I made it up to Claire Graham's place but the lights were out." Lynette gently tells her that there is no Claire Graham on the street and suggests that they go home. Tom arrives and watches as Allison snaps, yelling: "Let go of me! You're doing this to me, you're making me feel crazy. I said let go!" Allison slaps Lynette across the face, and immediately apologizes. She spots Tom, who says: "It's OK, mom. I'm here."

The next morning, Tom announces that the car is loaded and ready to go and Allison replies sadly: "To the nursing home." Tom insists that she is not going to a nursing home, explaining that it is "assisted living", but Allison asks him: "When do I get to leave? When do I get to go home?" She adds that she knows lots of elderly people who have gone to these places and not come back. Tom explains that Allison can't live alone anymore and adds that if something bad happened he would never forgive himself. "The only bad thing happening here is what you're doing to me," Allison tells him. Tom admits that he doesn't know what else to do. "When you called me from that camp you were scared," Allison says. "You kept saying, 'I want to come home, mom'. And I said, 'Tommy, if you mean that, I'll come get you'. That's what you do." She gets up and Lynette comforts a tearful Tom.

Meanwhile, Keith takes Bree back to his apartment and when he opens the door she is shocked at how clean and tidy it is. "I had this whole frozen smile ready," she admits. When Keith explains that he just switched his pot pourri, Bree tells him: "Take me right now on the table." They begin kissing but are interrupted when Keith's female roommate Mimi walks through the apartment. Bree is surprised that Keith has a roommate and says: "It looks like that frozen smile came in handy after all." The next morning, Bree wakes up in Keith's apartment and meets Mimi in the kitchen. She apologises and explains that Keith never told her that he had a female roommate. She adds: "He said you never slept together except those two times." Mimi squeals that they have never had sex and Bree admits that Keith told her that but she needed to see her reaction to know it was true. "Nicely done," Mimi replies. "You don't need to worry about other women. The guy never stops talking about you." Bree is pleased, and Mimi asks her to give Keith his mail. Bree agrees but as she flicks through the envelopes she notices one from the department of corrections. Later, Bree finds Renee and asks her if she ever thought Keith might be a "little crazy". She admits that she found out he is on probation for assault. Renee tells her that Keith was just standing up for his girlfriend at the time when a man started hitting on her. She explains that she found out from the barman. "It's nice to know chivalry isn't dead," Bree smiles. Renee tells her that if she wants to find out if Keith is violent, she should start a fight with him and see if he hits her.

Later, Bree and Keith arrive at Renee's party. Bree, who is dressed as a cheerleader, is approached by a man dressed as a football player and they joke about their costumes. The football player asks if he gets a kiss for scoring the winning touchdown, but Bree explains that someone else is taking her to the prom. When he persists, Bree tells him that their skit is over and eventually calls over Keith. She explains that the man won't leave her alone and Keith makes him leave. Bree thanks him for being so gallant, but as she turns away and continues talking he walks over to the man again and begins shouting at him. Bree runs after him and begs Keith to stop. Eventually, Keith walks outside and Bree follows, asking what happened. "He pushed my buttons and I went off," Keith shouts. "Is it not obvious?" Bree asks him why he is yelling at her and Keith explains that he has been arrested for this before and knows he has a problem. He says that he knows she wants to break up with him but Bree denies it. "Nine years ago my son found me face down, drunk," she tells him. "He had to turn the sprinklers on to wake me up. Did you not know you're dating the biggest lush in Fairview?" She adds that they all have baggage and she can deal with his anger. "Do you think you can deal with a control freak with a drinking problem?" she asks. Keith kisses her.

Renee arrives at Lynette's house to invite them to a party. Gaby explains that Grace is sleeping over but suggests that they could come over and show the adults Grace and Juanita's costume. She adds that Juanita is going as a puppy and will be "so cute". However, Renee insists that no children are allowed to come. Bree offers to attend if she can bring Keith, and Renee replies: "I guess one child will be OK."
The mysterious man from the previous episode, who had the poster revealing Susan's secret as a worker on the website "Va Va Va Broom", is Paul. It is all part of an elaborate plot to blackmail Susan into selling him her house. The mystery as to why Paul Young is buying up most of the houses on Wisteria Lane continues to deepen.

Meanwhile, Renee is happy that her marriage is over and that her settlement is lucrative. Renee and Gaby share secrets. Renee tells Gaby that she "renegotiated" the terms of her divorce settlement by sleeping with her ex-husband Doug's divorce lawyer and Gaby says that she had a nose job. Renee blabs about it to Bree and Lynette later after she and Gaby get into a small fight. Gaby, in revenge, tells Doug, who arrived in Fairview to reconcile with his wife, Renee's secret. After a huge fight between Renee and Gaby, they apologize to each other and Renee decides to follow through with the divorce.

Bree is exhausted after many all-nighters of sex with Keith's unrestricted libido. Later, he confesses that he was only trying to impress her (because Bree seemed too conservative and sophisticated for him) after Bree reveals she can't keep up with him. They tell each other that they like each other the way they are.

Tom asks his mother, Allison, as a nanny to take care of the baby. After a big argument, Lynette fires her mother-in-law, but Tom overrules her, telling her that she is going to stay. After Lynette and Allison's talk, Tom's mother shows symptoms of dementia to Penny, unknown to Lynette and Tom.
Carlos and Gaby meet the family who raised their biological daughter Grace. Their personalities and looks are astonishingly similar. Both families agree not to tell the girls about what happened and agree on making monthly family visits. We see that Grace is very well taught on how to behave, but Juanita is not. Grace falls in love with Gaby's Chanel purse, so Gaby wants to give her one, but Juanita's real mother, Carmen Sanchez, doesn't accept it. She tells Gaby that Grace is not spoiled and is a modest child. Gaby opens up to Carlos about her argument with Carmen, during which he tells Gaby that she better not drive their daughter's family away because they might take her and never come back. A few days later, when the Sanchez family is at the Solis home, Gaby gives Grace a necklace that she bought at the beginning of her modeling years. The mother and daughter agree to keep that as a secret.

Maxine tells Susan that her business is expanding throughout the whole USA and suggests that Susan should take a break for about a month so she wouldn't be over-exposed. Later that day, while driving, Susan sees that a billboard is being hung up with her on it. Furious, she rips it off and goes crying to Maxine. Maxine makes a phone call to her new business partners just to find out that Susan must pay them $9,000 for the billboards that they made if she doesn't want them to be placed everywhere. Susan is very worried, but Maxine comforts her with telling that Va-Va-Va-Broom also offers jobs that cross Susan's boundaries, meaning that they contain nudity and maybe pornography. Desperate for help, Susan accepts her offer. Later, a mysterious man, whose face isn't shown, is seen taking the ripped billboard out of the trash and leaving.

Penny offers to take care of Paige after seeing that Lynette is very busy and needs help. Lynette takes advantage of Penny's help and one day she goes jogging while she leaves Paige to Penny even though Penny told her that she has a test that day and must hurry to catch the school bus. Later, Lynette arrives at home and finds no one in it, so she hurries to Penny's school where she is called to the principal. The principal tells her that Penny even took the baby monitor before she went to sleep and got up earlier to feed her baby sister, and as a result she is exhausted. Lynette talks to Penny and finds out that she loves it when Lynette spends more time with her, so she tells Tom to hire a nanny so she can be the mom she used to be.

Renee ruins Bree's date with Keith by calling Danielle with her son Benjamin, Bree's grandson, to come visit Bree, just so Keith would find out that Bree is a grandmother. Anxious to take her revenge, she discovers from Lynette that Renee is terrified of little people after a circus incident in her childhood. While Renee is on her date with Keith in a fancy restaurant, Bree hires her friend from church, who is a dwarf, to get closer to Renee, and when he does, she gets hysterical. Bree is in the restaurant, and after hearing Renee's scream, she is satisfied. After another argument, Renee lets go of Keith and tells Bree that she can have him. To show her appreciation, Bree buys her a little gift.

Paul Young buys his old house on Wisteria Lane, in which he used to live with Mary Alice Young, his ex-wife, and their adopted son, Zach Young. He also shows interest in buying Karen McCluskey's house, telling her that she is old and may die soon, so she'd better sell her house now. Karen is angry at him and tells Beth about it. Beth, who agreed with Paul that there would not be anymore secrets between them, asks Paul if he talked to any of the neighbors and his answer is negative. Confused, Beth wonders what Paul is doing.
After visiting the doctor, Tom is prescribed marijuana as a cure for his depression, since all of Lynette's attempts to make him cheerful don't work. She disposes his marijuana, and instead puts oregano in the bottle. To Lynette's surprise, Tom does not feel the difference and acts like he is "high". Later, after seeing Carlos unhappy, Tom offers him the drug he is prescribed, and Carlos tells him that it is oregano. Tom is furious at Lynette, but she convinces him that he doesn't need the drugs to feel happy again.

Bree, Susan and Lynette invite Paul's wife, Beth to their weekly poker game. Paul tells her to make up a story about what is going on between them. During the game, all of the housewives want to discover as much as possible about Paul, and Beth tells them that he is changed, but does not hide that they met each other during Paul was in prison. Beth is having doubts that they didn't tell her something about her husband, so she asks Karen, and she tells her that Paul is the number one suspect for the murder of Martha Huber. Later, Beth tells Paul about that, and he denies it. She tells him that no matter if he is innocent or not, she would still love him.

Gabby and Carlos sign the documents that say that the two can not sue the hospital, and the hospital won't do any actions to find their biological daughter. Gabby, however, can't get the thought out of her head that her real daughter is out there. While shopping with Susan, Gabby looks at all the little girls in the mall, and panics. She talks to Bob, and they agree that Bob would hire a private detective to find her real daughter but doesn't tell him that Carlos would not support that idea. Later, after Bob has talked to the family that has Carlos and Gabby's daughter, Carlos finds out about it, and furiously threatens her with a divorce if something happens.

Just as Bree is about to invite Keith for a dinner, his girlfriend shows up and Bree is devastated that he has a girlfriend. She accepts Renee's previous offer of a night out in a club. At the club they see Keith and Renee doesn't wait a minute - she goes to flirt with him even though Bree told her he is already taken. Seconds later the waiter tells Bree that he and his girlfriend broke up that afternoon. Wanting to get what she wants, Bree makes herself look sexy in the bathroom, just to find out that Keith is taking Renee home. Anxious to know what is going on in Renee's home, Bree rips off her sprinklers and calls Keith to repair them during which they agree on a date in few days. The next day, Renee is angry at Bree for taking over Keith and tells her that it's not over yet. Bree smiles and does not care about the competition.

Susan gets better and better at her internet work, and she gets the bonus check that a girl named Stacy who lives in the same building, used to receive. Stacy accuses Susan of stealing one of her "moves", and as a revenge she steals one of Susan's "moves". Susan then rips off her vacuum cleaner and watches how Stacy is now all covered with the dust. The two of them get into a fight until Maxine breaks up the fight and tells Stacy to apologize to Susan or she will be fired. Stacy apologizes, and tells Susan that after 6 years of working for Maxine, she still can't move back home. Susan is worried after hearing what Stacy had to say, and cancels the dinner with Mike for their anniversary at a fancy restaurant saying that she wants to save the money and not spend it on unnecessary things.
The episode begins with Bree acknowledging her lust for her new handy-man, Keith. While admiring his backside as she is backing out of her driveway, she accidentally runs into Gaby’s daughter, Juanita, who is riding her bicycle. At the hospital, Gaby informs everyone that Juanita will be fine but pulls Bree and Andrew aside to point out the terrible coincidence that while Bree hit Juanita with her car, Andrew hit Gaby’s mother-in-law (also named Juanita) with his car a decade earlier. Bree is forgiven by Gaby, but Andrew tells his mother that he witnessed Bree admiring Keith. He tells Bree that he believes Keith is too young for someone her age. This resonates with Bree and she returns home. After becoming excited by a shirtless Keith, she promptly fires him and he angrily leaves. After talking with Karen McCluskey, Bree realizes that it isn’t unusual for her to have such an interest in Keith. She overcomes her concerns regarding the age difference and her recent divorce from Orson, and locates Keith in a local bar. She explains that she enjoys his company and that she actually could use someone like him in her life right now. He agrees to return to work on her house.

Susan has begun her new job that she recently obtained from her landlord, Maxine, where she cleans her home in raunchy lingerie on a webcam while being broadcasted to paying customers of Maxine’s website. Susan is very hesitant at first but soon becomes quite the expert thanks to some pointers and a pep-talk from Maxine. While “performing” on one of her webcasts, Mike returns home and nearly discovers Susan’s secret. Instead, he is turned on by Susan’s revealing lingerie and the two nearly make love on camera. Fortunately, Susan is able to log off without Mike noticing. Soon, Susan starts making more money than Mike and manages to make their truck payment before Mike has to ask for an extension. He continues to believe that Susan is making the extra cash by selling her craft-made jewelry, and brings her flowers to show his appreciation for all her effort. The guilt begins to overcome Susan, however, and she admits to Maxine that her conscious is getting to her.

Tom returns home early from work after feeling ill, yet again. Lynette demands he visit the doctor because he has been feeling this way for several days. When Tom returns from the doctor the next day, he informs Lynette that he is suffering from Postpartum Depression, a condition that generally affects women and, although rare, even men. Lynette does not take this news seriously and is astonished that Tom is taking the diagnosis seriously. Meanwhile, Renee (who is still staying in the Scavo home) warns Lynette that she should take Tom’s concerns more seriously, but Lynette ignores this. Lynette is especially angered when she learns that Tom has been confiding in Renee, listening to his problems when Lynette will not. One evening, Lynette learns that the two have gone to dinner but left a message for her to join them if she wishes. Angry, Lynette meets the two at a restaurant just as they are discussing Lynette’s dismissive behavior towards Tom. Lynette pulls Renee aside and tells her that it is inappropriate to be so close to Tom and demands that their current friendship be toned down. That night, Lynette realizes she needs to be there for her husband more often and the two decide to simply talk to each other rather than make love, thus making progress in their marriage. Renee later apologizes to Lynette and is forgiven, and reveals that she has just bought Edie Britt’s former home on Wisteria Lane. Lynette is hesitant to the idea, but happy nonetheless. In private, Tom warns Renee that it may be a bad idea for her to be their neighbor because he is afraid Lynette may find out about “something that happened” between he and Renee years earlier.

As Juanita recovers in the hospital after being accidentally hit by Bree’s car, a nurse needs Gaby to make a few clarifications regarding her daughter’s health background. It is then that Gaby discovers that her daughter’s blood type is not consistent with what it should be. Since Gaby and Carlos’s blood types cannot possibly produce what Juanita’s is. This leads Gaby into believing that Carlos must not be Juanita’s father. She asks Susan to recall a vacation the two had taken years earlier where Gaby had been harmlessly flirting with a French man, and Susan remembers that Gaby did not return to their hotel room until the following morning. This news makes Gaby believe that Juanita was conceived through had a drunken affair with the French man. Terrified of this realization, Gaby makes a desperate (and humorous) attempt to make Carlos believe she has “sexsomnia”, a “disorder” in which the sufferer has sex in their sleep. Carlos does not seem to take his wife seriously and dismisses the claim without asking any other questions. The next day, Carlos arrives at the hospital to check on Juanita. He encounters the same nurse who informed Gaby of their daughter’s blood type. Gaby arrives just as Carlos is learning about the inconsistencies of Juanita’s blood type. She panics and begins to tell Carlos that he isn’t Juanita’s father. Realizing he can no longer hide the truth, Carlos pulls Gaby aside and finally reveals to her that Juanita was accidentally switched at birth, devastating Gaby.

Paul Young visits the hospital shortly after Juanita is admitted, much to the surprise of Bree, Andrew, Karen and Lynette. The four of them are put in an uncomfortable position when Paul insists they all pray for Juanita’s recovery. Later, Bree and Karen gossip back on Wisteria Lane with Bob and Lee. A nervous, clearly lost woman begins walking down the street in an angry state of confusion. The four of them approach her and offer their help. She informs them that she is looking for Paul Young, much to their surprise. Paul then emerges from his home and yells for the strange woman. He then introduces her to the others as his wife, Beth Young. Later, it is learned that Beth met Paul while he was still in prison for the murder of Felicia Tillman. She often wrote him letters, sometimes sexually explicit, professing her love for him. However, Beth never expected that Paul would be released. Apparently lost in fantasy, she married Paul while he was still incarcerated. Much to her dismay, Felicia Tillman was found to be alive and Paul was released. She appears extremely detached, timid, and uncomfortable with her new husband. An angry Paul begins growing impatient that Beth has yet to consummate their marriage. He warns her that his patience will only last for so long.
Plot
Felicia Tilman was pulled over for speeding and was arrested for having no identification, prompting Paul Young to be freed and able to return to Wisteria Lane. Paul's lawyer visits him as he gets ready to leave his cell. He hands over his settlement check and Paul admits that all he wants to do is go back home. When he returns to Wisteria Lane, Mrs. McCluskey is first to see him and starts frantically to inform her neighbors.

Bree tells Gabrielle that Andrew hit Carlos's mother. She gets emotional, not because of what exactly she has been told, but because now she feels pressured to tell Carlos, and she knows that his anger will get out of control and he'll do something bad. She wishes Bree had never told her.

When the housewives discover the news that Paul Young is back, they discuss him on the porch, and he comes out and offers to tell them how he has been released. Inside, he reveals his grudges（うらみ、怨恨） toward them because no one attended his trial or visited him in prison. Later, in an ironic moment, Paul goes to visit Felicia in jail. She states her sentence is two to five years, eighteen months with good behaviour. She tells Paul she wants to make sure he is either back behind bars or dead for what he did. Paul decides to let her know that these conversations are recorded. But after he puts down the receiver, he finally admits the crime to her by mouthing through the glass.

Lynette has been neglecting housework for the baby, and her kin（家族、親族） are beginning to complain. They get a phone call from her old college buddy Renée Perry (Vanessa L. Williams) and she announces, without even asking, that she is coming to visit. When Renée arrives, having married to a high-paid baseball pro and living the high life, they fall into old habits of making sassy（生意気な） insults at each other, claiming it's part of their 'friendship'. Renée views Lynette's life as desirable, pathetic, and shocking, as this very different as it is not at all how she expected the Lynette that she knew to end up. Lynette herself has known this for years, and it hurts that someone else has finally vocalized it. Renée mentions that she hasn't booked a hotel yet so Parker suggests that she just stay in the house. Lynette doesn't want this, but Renée accepts happily.

The Delfinos move into their new home, an apartment. Susan assures M.J., and herself, that this is only temporary. To help speed along the road to recovery, she has been making homemade jewelery, which is later revealed to be ugly and too big.

Susan drops off the security deposit to the landlady and mentions that her family is experiencing financial troubles. She invites her in for tea. Inside, Maxine recounts（詳しく語る、物語る） how her late husband's illness drained them. But she overcame by being strong and starting her own business, which helps suffering women just like she and Susan start over. It becomes clear she isn't referring to the apartment complex, and she tells Susan that she would be perfect as an employee for this business. Susan is intrigued（興味をそそられて、好奇心）, as she could definitely use any extra side-money anyway. She reveals her business -- a porn website in which female attendants of the building do chores in lingerie for the camera. Needless to say, Susan is apalled. The landlady reasons that it really isn't that bad, as there is no nudity and no sex. She also says the patrons of this site are overseas, so she wouldn't have to worry about anyone she knows finding out. Susan is amazed at the salary, but still storms out.

Orson packs up his belongings from Bree's house with the help of his physical therapist. He is not malevolent（悪意の有る、憎しみをもった）, but wanting the best for both Bree and himself. Bree is very sad and does not want this. After he leaves, she comforts herself by getting up from the couch to look over old family photos. She notices some peeling wallpaper, and it refuses to stick. She eventually gets frustrated and vents（発散する、ぶちまける） by tearing all the wallpaper in her house down. Later, she hires a young contractor, who will help her to reinvent her empty home, symbolic of reinventing her empty life. She is ready to be adventurous but her idea and his idea of that word are not the same. Orson is outside and she excuses herself. He hands over the division of assets and Bree learns that he is now going out with his physical therapist. Bree is flustered. Orson tells her sadly that they were unhappy for so long, and at this age they can't allow happiness to simply pass them by. Bree goes back inside in a daze（ぼうっとする、当惑する）. In a suggestion, he says that Bree would look hot against a certain color, and says that Bree has options and can do whatever she wants. Bree looks into his face and mumbles an agreement.

Susan is pitching her less-than-perfect homemade jewelery to the others at Lynette's house, and Lynette introduces Renée to them. The pair begin to exchange banter（冗談を言い合う、からかう） again in front of the other women but the conversation turns sour when Renée hints that Lynette has not lived up to her college award of 'Most Likely To Succeed'. Lynette discusses the incident in the bedroom with Tom later that evening, and wonders why she would come just to criticise her life. Tom encourages her to confront Renée and boot her out.

Lynette presents Renée with a phone book and advises her to look up a hotel and a taxi. Renée opens up. Her husband was having an affair with his agent's assistant. She found out and confronted him, saying me or her. He gladly chose his mistress and left. Now Renée's already fragile life is falling apart. Lynette says she can stay as long as she likes.

Mike tells Susan that he has been offered a temporary job on an oil rig（掘削装置） in Alaska and is considering taking it so that they can return to the house in Wisteria Lane more quickly. But Susan doesn't want him to because it is dangerous and just a wild idea. Mike says he doesn't want to either, but there are no good options in their situation. The next day, she visits Maxine's room and accepts the job, and begins posing for the camera soon, while no one else is home.

It turns out that the Solis family is the one harboring（隠された） the switched baby, and she is Juanita. Carlos is quite furious, and when Jack, one of the hospital's lawyers assigned to this dreadful（恐ろしい、いやな） task, says that the hospital hasn't tracked them down, Carlos forbids him from telling Gaby anything. Jack insists that he has a legal obligation, which prompts Carlos to say he will deliver the bad news to her himself, but really doesn't want to because it would devastate her. Later, Carlos explains to Juanita her namesake, for she didn't get to even see her grandmother. Gaby watches them from the door. Then she tucks her in, and they go into a hypothetical conversation in which Gaby says her life would be ruined if something were to happen to Juanita. Carlos watches on from the door.

Carlos shows up at the hospital giving Jack an ultimatum（最終提案、最終通告）: either he ends the operation to fix the problem and pretends like this didn't happen, or Carlos will file a multimillion dollar lawsuit against the hospital, which he is sure he would win. Jack states that he doubts the process can be stopped now.

Gaby informs Bree that she's definitely not going to tell Carlos. Bree suggests that he deserves to know but Gaby explains that he is so happy right now, with the marriage being the best it's ever been, the children growing up wonderfully, and a great job, and she couldn't ruin that, preferring to pretend like it didn't happen. Gabrielle and Carlos continue their lives, each keeping an important secret from the other.

In the streets, Lee and Paul have a conversation. Paul wants to buy the house across the street, his old house. Lee comments on how weird this is, but Paul says he has a good plan.

Felicia sticks up a newspaper cutout of Paul on a wall of her cell. Her roommate says he looks like a killer and it is a shame he was released. Felicia replies it's all for the best, as now he can receive the punishment he's entitled to. Then she tells her a secret, that Paul will be dead within six months, according to her. Her roommate asks she can make sure of that, with her being in jail, and Felicia contests that while Paul has no friends on Wisteria Lane, she does.

Lovers of Self?

Lovers of Self?

Numerous websites offer “Tips for How to Love Yourself”. A google search for “love yourself” produces more than a million hits. One site—written by a psychotherapist—gives such an extensive list of ways to “boost your self-love” that if you followed all the directions, you would be constantly talking to yourself. Writing yourself notes. Indulging your every whim and desire.

Another site includes a quote from Iyanla Vanzant: “I am the one I have been looking for,” she said. One lady suggests putting this on your bathroom mirror so you can say it to yourself every day: “I look in the mirror and what do I see? a beautiful lady staring back at me. Oh wow! I thought, who could that be? (then smile and say), oh! It’s only me.” She also includes this warning: “Don’t become too narcissistic or people will shun you.” One has to wonder: how narcissistic is “too narcissistic”?

So, what do you think? Is all this good and healthy? Are we supposed to “love ourselves”? To listen to the great spiritual leaders of our time (i.e., psychologists, psychiatrists and psychotherapists) one would think so. In fact, many Christian psychologists, psychiatrists, and psychotherapists (who shall remain nameless) agree and tell us we should indeed “love ourselves”. To listen to them, you’d think Jesus Himself commanded it. Remember the time Jesus was asked, “What commandment is the foremost of all?” (Mark 12:28)? Of course you do. Do you remember that He answered with a three-fold answer: “Love God, love your neighbor and love yourself”? Of course you don’t. He never said that.

When Jesus was asked, “What commandment is the foremost of all?” He gave a two-part answer: “Love God and love your neighbor.” Many teachers—some I respect very much—have tried to find three commandments in Jesus’ words. But “love yourself” just isn’t there. Jesus mentions only two commands: “The foremost…and the second.” The word “second” certainly limits the list Jesus gave us.

Nowhere in the Bible are we instructed to love ourselves. But the Bible is not silent on the subject. Self-love is addressed in two ways in Scripture:

Self-love is assumed
This passage is a good example—Jesus assumes you love yourself. He told you to love your neighbor “as ourself.” As much as you love yourself. Another example where Scripture assumes we already love ourselves is Ephesians 5:28-30:

“So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, because we are members of His body.”

Notice that Paul—under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit—did not write “…love their own wives as their own bodies, and if you don’t love yourselves, husbands, get busy and love yourselves!” Notice that Paul—under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit—did write, “…no one ever hated his own flesh…” Scripture assumes we love ourselves—and it is true. Even those who are self-destructive love themselves. They are willing to harm themselves to get someone to notice them. Some are even ready to take the drastic step of suicide in order to put themselves out of their own misery. What looks like self-hate—in reality—is self-love.

Self-love is sinful
The second thing the Bible teaches about self-love is that it is sinful. A negative thing. Usually, when you find “self” in front of another word in the Scriptures it is a bad thing. There are, of course, some exceptions. When the self is controlled and limited in some way, it is good. Self-control. Self-restraint.

But usually, self + something = sinful. Things like self-willed, self-exaltation and self-indulgence are a few examples that come to mind.

2 Timothy 3:1-5 is an excellent example: “But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self…” Is this a good thing as many would have us believe? No. “Lovers of self” is the first item in a list that will characterize people who live in “the last days.” The rest of the list tells the complete story:

“But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.”

Self-love here is clearly sinful. It is “holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power”. Self-love is a counterfeit virtue. “Lovers of self” is in contrast to “lovers of God”. That’s the real love we should be pursuing. And that’s the real issue—the real battle. Sinful mankind is constantly faced with the temptation to dethrone God and exalt self. If you love self, you are not loving God. If you love God—really love God—you cannot love self. “Avoid such men (and women) as these.” I don’t think it would be inaccurate to say that first and foremost, we must avoid being such men and women.

What is a proper view of self?
Please don’t misunderstand. The Scriptures do not teach self-hate either. Self-hate is satanic. It is just as much a lie as self-love. Satan is a thief and a liar. He wants us to be “self-destructive.” Self-hate is not Biblical either.

The Scriptures teach us to have a proper self-worth. Not self-love. Not self-hate. Self-worth is an understanding that God has created us in His own image and He loves us. Paul wrote in Romans 12:3, “…I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment…” We should not think too highly of ourselves. Nor should we think too lowly of ourselves. We should think rightly about ourselves. Soberly. With sound judgment.

On the one hand, we have been created in the image of God and God loved us so much that He sent His only Son—the Second Person of the Trinity—to pay a high cost to reconcile us with God. Does that make you feel pretty special? It should. But don’t forget the other hand.

On the other hand, we are sinful and rebellious. We were created in the image of God, but we are not God. There is nothing in us that makes us worthy of God’s affection. Our worth is not found in ourselves, but in the fact that God created us and loves us.

Dr. Jay Adams—pastor, professor, counselor and author—got it right when he wrote:

“Christ declared: ‘He who has found his life shall lose it, and he who has lost his life for my sake shall find it’ (Matthew 10:39), and ‘For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it; but whoever loses his life for my sake shall find it’ (Matthew 16:25). Clearly the one who seeks his identity in himself or in his relationship to other men will never find that which he seeks. It may be found only by the abandonment of one’s own desires and a willingness to follow Christ. Identity is found in Him; in letting loose of all else for His sake. One finds a satisfying identity nowhere else. Thus, love of self is not a biblically legitimate end. One is satisfied with himself only when he is in the proper relationship with Christ, having a clear conscience before God and men” (The Christian Counselor’s Manual: The Practice of Nouthetic Counseling; Zondervan: 1973; p.147).

One night when David was looking up at the stars, he whispered, “What is man that you take thought of him?” (Psalm 8:4). It didn’t make sense to David that God even thinks about us. It really doesn’t make sense that God loves sinful, rebellious, lowly mankind. But this is one of the great truths God Himself has revealed to us in His book. Our response should be the same one David had: Praise! “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:1,9).
